Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid commonly used in candle making to improve the hardness, opacity, and melting point of wax. By adding stearic acid to candle wax, manufacturers can produce high-quality candles that burn longer and more evenly.

Description

Stearic acid is a versatile and essential ingredient in candle making that offers numerous benefits for creating high-quality candles. Derived from natural sources such as animal fats or vegetable oils, stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid that plays a key role in enhancing the performance and aesthetics of candles.

One of the primary functions of stearic acid in candle making is to increase the hardness and durability of the wax. By adding stearic acid to your wax blend, you can create candles that are more resistant to melting, warping, or becoming misshapen. This results in candles that have a longer burn time and maintain their shape better, making them an ideal choice for both personal use and gifting.

In addition to improving the structural integrity of candles, stearic acid also helps enhance the opacity and color vibrancy of the wax. When incorporated into the wax blend, stearic acid can produce candles with a more solid and opaque appearance, giving them a smoother and more polished finish. This is particularly beneficial for creating candles with vibrant colors or those that require a more consistent and even texture.

Furthermore, stearic acid contributes to the fragrance throw of candles by helping to bind and distribute scents more effectively. By acting as a scent carrier, stearic acid can help ensure that the fragrance in your candles is evenly distributed and released gradually as the candle burns, resulting in a more consistent and long-lasting scent experience.

Overall, stearic acid is a valuable additive in candle making that offers a range of benefits, including improved hardness, color vibrancy, opacity, and fragrance throw. Whether you are a beginner or experienced candle maker, incorporating stearic acid into your wax blends can help you create candles that are not only visually appealing but also perform exceptionally well, delighting your senses and enhancing your candle-making craftsmanship.

  • Our triple-pressed stearic acid (also called Stearin), a white powder, is an highly-effective wax additive used to harden wax. It’s a great hardener for low melt point waxes, and lowers the melt point of higher temperature waxes.
  • Melt Point:  approx 130° F (54 C)
  • You can use anywhere from 1 tbsp to 5 tbsp per pound of wax.  As with any additive – test your candles thoroughly to know how this will effect your wicking.
